The Puppet's Happiness Is This Simple – Yung-hsing-le Shadow Puppet Theater Special Exhibition

Date: 2026-01-01 — 2026-08-31 Organizer: 高雄市立歷史博物館
In real life, there is a group of people who continue to maintain their passion for shadow puppetry and persist in their dedication. Do you know how the performers, facing the dual pressures of heritage and livelihood, switch between different roles and strive to perform shadow puppetry to get close to the audience, making it a beloved performing art?
This exhibition focuses on the century-old Yung-hsing-le Shadow Puppet Theater of Kaohsiung. By depicting the performance journeys of three performers—the fourth-generation Chang Hsin-kuo (張新國) and Chang Ying-chiao (張英嬌), and the fifth-generation Chang Hsin-hung (張信鴻)—it embodies the dialogue and continuation between the traditional art of shadow puppetry and modern society, using the element of "dialogue" to lead the audience into the world of shadow puppetry. The performers imbue the puppets with personality and vitality, making them come alive on stage. The exhibition features a selection of works primarily by the main performers of the Yung-hsing-le Shadow Puppet Theater since its founding, including puppets preserved for over a century, enlarged puppets, and classic puppets and images from plays such as "Ne-cha Makes Trouble in the Eastern Sea," "Cutting the Flesh," and "Journey to the West."
