This summer, we are honored to invite Senior Advisor Yao Chia-wen to Wen-Chao Bookstore to share his representative work "Taiwan Seven-Color Record" (臺灣七色記), leading readers into the creative process behind works such as "Red Bean Calamity" (紅豆劫), "White Board Household" (白板戶), and "Yellow Tiger Seal" (黃虎印), witnessing how words cross walls and how freedom continues to grow in thought.
About the Speaker
Mr. Yao Chia-wen, born in 1938 in Changhua Hemei, is a pioneer of Taiwan's democratic movement, a writer, and currently a Senior Advisor to the Presidential Office. A graduate of the Department of Law at National Taiwan University, he was involved in the Tangwai democratic movement in his early years, long advocating for Taiwan's democracy, freedom, and human rights, and is an important witness and participant in Taiwan's democratization process.
After the Formosa Incident in 1979, Yao Chia-wen was sentenced to twelve years in prison for political charges and was released on parole in 1987 (his conviction was overturned in 2019). In December of the same year after his release, he was elected the second chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party and published the long historical novel "Taiwan Seven-Color Record."
During his years in prison, he continued reading, researching, and writing, resisting walls and confinement with firm will. After his release, in addition to continuing to engage in public affairs, he also devoted himself to literary creation and historical writing, integrating personal life experiences, Taiwan's historical memory, and profound observations of human nature into his works.
His representative literary creation, the "Seven-Color Record" series, depicts the fates of characters and social changes under different historical backgrounds in novel form, possessing both historical depth and literary depth. Works such as "Red Bean Calamity," "White Board Household," and "Yellow Tiger Seal" not only present the development trajectory of Taiwanese society but also demonstrate the author's ongoing contemplation of freedom, justice, and human values.
From a democratic activist to a literary creator, Yao Chia-wen transcends the limitations of time through action and words, witnessing the power of thought and leaving precious historical and cultural assets for Taiwan.
