[Special Exhibition] The Birth of a Museum: Ten Years of Exploration and Practice in Art as a Vehicle for Enlightenment
On August 13, 2016, the Chung Tai World Museum (中台世界博物館) officially opened in Puli (埔里), the geographic center of Taiwan. Continuing the founder, the late Venerable Wei Chueh (惟覺安公老和尚)'s vision of promoting modern Buddhism in the 21st century through the 'Five Transformations,' with the principle of 'Art as a Vehicle for Buddhism,' it has walked through ten years of exploration and practice. Through exhibitions and diverse activities, it translates religious contexts, allowing the Buddha's teachings to manifest as different landscapes of the museum in people's viewing and participation.
In the museum field, handling public issues, professional displays, and artifact preservation all require accumulated experience. Adhering to principles amid professional and social trends requires a spirit of 'neither joy nor fear.' This special exhibition reviews how the museum navigated the initial period of exploration, as well as the development of exhibitions, educational activities, and volunteer services, presenting the ongoing dialogue and balance between the founding vision and museum professionalism.
Looking to the future, the Chung Tai World Museum will continue to uphold the core spirit of 'humanism, compassion, and equality,' promoting the concept of art as a vehicle for enlightenment. Through spiritual environmental protection, cultural participation, and equal access, it aligns with global museum trends, and looks forward to the next decade, hoping to become a learning field for 'Visual Tripitaka' and 'Spiritual Environmental Protection.'
With this purpose and vision, the tenth-anniversary commemorative exhibition is planned from four aspects: founding, exhibitions, educational outreach, and volunteers, introducing the museum's ten-year journey of exploration and practice. It also invites audiences interested in museum practice to walk together through the museum's growth path.
