The Taiwanese women's art movement began to brew in the 1980s and sprouted and developed in the 1990s. In addition to holding exhibitions related to female artists in Taiwanese museums and galleries in the 1990s, media openness led to a significant increase in related reports and publications on women's art, promoting the development of contemporary women's art in Taiwan.
The 'Reconstructing the World: Gender and Body in Contemporary Art' exhibition features works by five contemporary female artists whose life experiences are connected to Tainan. Their creative media are diverse, including video installations, fiber weaving, mixed media, painting, photography, and site-specific creations. The exhibition guides viewers to contemplate the relationships between our bodies and society, culture, race, and overlapping virtual and physical spaces, whether it's the mother's body, the socially gendered body, the digital body and voice, the body surface carrying cultural symbols, the presentation of indigenous cultural symbols and symbolism through extensive physical labor, or the exploration of the intersection between linear virtual space and materialized physical space in the exhibition venue through the audience's walking and participation.
