The Woodwind Family: Voices of Spirits, Birdsong, and Fairies
Woodwind instruments in the orchestra possess very distinct tonal personalities. The flute is bright and agile, the oboe has a focused tone, the clarinet has a wide range, and the bassoon can shift between low notes and comedic effects. Woodwinds are often used for melody, dialogue, phrase transitions, and character portrayal.
In this lecture, Mr. Lin Jen-pin will start from the four major woodwind instruments, introducing their sound production principles, ranges, and orchestral functions. Through symphonies, ballet music, and program music, he will guide the audience to hear how woodwinds in the orchestra take on roles of narration, color, and variation in musical figures.
