Lectures
Miaobei Arts Academy - 2026 Miaobei Lecture Series III: The Brass Family - Horns, Power, and the Spatial Sense of Orchestral Music "The Acoustic Functions of French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, and Tuba"
Lecturer: Mr. Lin Jen-pin (林仁斌), Chairman of the Taiwan Bungee Arts Association (台灣蹦藝術協會).
The Brass Family: Horns, Power, and the Spatial Sense of Orchestral Music
Brass instruments are often directly associated by audiences with grand volume, but their role in the orchestra is not limited to loud playing. The French horn can bridge the timbres of woodwinds and brass; the trumpet has clear rhythmic and signaling functions; the trombone can reinforce harmonic thickness; and the tuba supports the bass width of the orchestra.
In this lecture, Mr. Lin Jen-pin will introduce the sound production methods, ranges, and orchestral seating of brass instruments, and through symphonies and symphonic poems, explain how brass establishes themes, reinforces cadential harmonies, alters the spatial sense of music, and creates different orchestral effects across eras.
