The String Family: The Tonal Backbone of the Orchestra
String instruments are the largest and most complete in range among the instrument groups of the orchestra. Violins, violas, cellos, and double basses together form the foundational sound of the ensemble, capable of playing the main melody as well as supporting harmony, rhythm, and bass lines.
This lecture will introduce the range, sectional functions, and common playing techniques of string instruments, including pizzicato, tremolo, detaché, legato, mute, and harmonics. Through classic works, it will explain how composers utilize the characteristics of strings to construct a magnificent symphonic world.
