KSAF Opera "La Bohème"
The Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival's self-produced operas, from "The Magic Flute" in 2015 to "Rigoletto" in 2025, have been sold out and highly praised for 10 years. This year, the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra presents a brand-new production, the festival's ninth self-produced opera work: Puccini's timeless classic that touches hearts—"La Bohème".
Among Puccini's famous four great operas, we have seen the tragically beautiful and heroic "Tosca", the foolishly heartbreaking "Madama Butterfly", and the domineering "Turandot". Each one is soul-stirring and enduring. While the story of "La Bohème" may seem simple and unadorned, from the dark cold of the attic to the bright liveliness of the streets, and then to the silent sorrow by the sickbed, the music and plot are tightly integrated. Whether in ensemble scenes or arias, it is full of dramatic tension, using delicate melodies to depict characters' emotions and rich orchestral colors to enhance the atmosphere of the scenes, commemorating the youthful recklessness of being poor with nothing but ideals, yet living more brilliantly than anyone.
Classic arias such as the male protagonist Rodolfo's "Che gelida manina" (Your tiny hand is frozen), the female protagonist Mimi's "Mi chiamano Mimì" (They call me Mimi), and the second female lead Musetta's "Quando m'en vo" (When I go along) all originate from this opera.
