2026 Refined Hakka Grand Opera "When the Brass Gong Sounds"
After the defeat in the Sino-Japanese War, Taiwan was forced to be ceded. With leaders fleeing to the mainland and panic spreading, the local gentry Wu Tang-hsing (吳湯興) faced a life-or-death choice: to live in ignominy or to stand up and defend the land? Ignoring his mother's worries, he made a passionate oath before the Temple of the Heavenly Empress. Despite the deep support of his wife and virtuous sister, as allies fell in martyrdom and supplies of food and pay were cut off, he was forced to make a final farewell between family bonds and his mission, cutting off his queue, entrusting his orphan, and heading south wounded. Facing the powerful artillery fire of the Japanese army, Wu Tang-hsing abandoned any retreat and launched a desperate counterattack atop Bagua Mountain. This solitary courage, knowing the impossible yet doing it anyway, led him to a heroic death for his country, using his life to fulfill the ultimate choice of defending his homeland.
